Spring / Summer Makeup Trends - Sun-kissed Radiant Skin

When it comes to skin, I think that gorgeous, fresh heatlhy looking skin is always in fashion. While matte skin is more suitable for autumn/ winter, glowing sunkissed skin is what everyone want for spring and summer. However, the go-to look for most makeup artists and designer this season was flawless radiant skin, which does not necesserily mean dewy. Strobing was used a lot (J.W. Anderson, Tanya Taylor, Givenchy), but there was a mixture of both, depending from one designer to another. A lot of them used powders to set the make up and reduce the oils (Versace, Gucci), but the foundation was very light, and some used only concealer to even out the complexion. Rather than creating a mask, skin was showing through the base. A dash of blush, highlight and/ or bronzer added to the looks. Blush wasn't seen in as many looks as we'd think, but those who used blush placed it quite high on the cheekbones which really brought them out (Tibi, Marchesa, Simone Rocha, Alberta Ferretti).

90's grunge inspired looks are very popular at the moment. Very minimal make up is the key to the look, but the skin has to be perfect. Bare lips and eyeliner (Issa), or stained, glossy lips and no eye make up looks what I noticed all over the catwalk.
I guess the reason why everyone opted for this look, apart from it being very fresh and just what everyone wants in spring and summer, is that doesn't take a lot of time to create it. With dozens of models that have to be done up for the catwalk, a simple, yet effective look like this would take about 15 minutes or less.

Here are some looks created by MAC, Pat McGrath, Tom Pacheux and others:

Lucia Pieroni working with MAC for Emanuel Ungaro's show created faux freckless to add to the natural sunkissed look. The only product she used for the base was MAC's Cream Colour base, and different shades of brown pencils for the freckless.

The Look: Girls of Summer
How-To: We've seen faux freckles one or two times each of the last few seasons—not nearly enough to call them a trend and forgivable if you missed them altogether—though we can't help but wonder why they aren't more of a thing. When done right, like at Ungaro, they're charming, summery and realistic enough that you'd never question their authenticity. The key, according to makeup artist Lucia Pieroni, is to apply M.AC. Cream Colour Base in Crevasse first for a natural tan, then "dot across the cheeks and nose kind of like a constellation of stars—two together here, three there—so they become quite random and not like Cabbage Patch." Using different shades of brown and taupe brow or lip pencils gives coloring similar to what you'd get from the sun, and "you want to make sure the pencils aren't too sharp," she adds.

The Look: Golden Hour
How-To: Sometimes runway beauty gets so black and white—it's either totally minimal or theatrically over-the-top—that we forget about the middle ground, the place where the woman who is never going to skip foundation or mascara no matter how many shows tell her to wants to be. Elie Saab brought us there. The makeup was polished but not too done (this girl is never going to utter the phrase 'glam squad'): Bronze the cheekbones and forehead, tap peachy-gold highlight along the high points and inner corners of the eyes and softly blend taupe shadow with a hint of shimmer across the lids. Top it off with a coat of mascara on the top and bottom and a touch of lip balm and you're good to go to the office or a gala (and how many looks can claim that?).

The Look: Au Natural
How-To: Colorful eyes and red lips are two things you'll probably never see at an Isabel Marant show; bronze skin and rumpled hair, on the other hand, are always on the lineup. "It's just healthy, shiny, clean—really cool, no frills," said hairstylist Sam Mcknight, who evaluated each model on a case-by-case basis, often skipping product all together unless the hair was too dry or frizzy (solution: Moroccanoil at the ends) or too silky (solution: Bumble and Bumble Dryspun Finish). The makeup (or lack thereof), said Lisa Butler, "is really about Isabel; she's her own muse." After massaging moisturizer into the skin, Butler used tattoo coverup to neutralize darkness under the eyes and blended taupe cream shadow across the lids. Next, she took a brush and dotted contouring cream in the hollows of the cheeks for a subtle, colorless shadow and to finish, a little brow gel if needed and some lip balm.

The Look: It Brits
How-To: There's a fine, but important, line between "It" girl hair and grunge-y hair and no one walks it better than the French girls (think Jane Birkin, Clémence Poésy), the British girls (Kate Moss, Alexa Chung) and Chloé. The trick is to hardly wash it, but keep it looking clean; to have loose, natural waves, but never admit to picking up a curling iron. Same goes for the makeup. Lucia Pieroni smudged liner into the waterline, especially the lower one, and used clear mascara over black to give more of a napped-in feel than a slept-in-hungover one.

The Look: Tribal Tough
How-To: Valentino has sent a predominantly white cast of models down the runway with cornrows before (see Pre-Fall 2015), but this was the first time cornrows mixed with show notes that referenced "tribal Africa." Predictably, the accusations of cultural appropriation flew swiftly. But if you can move past what was perhaps poor judgment on the design duo's part, you'll find a whole lot of beauty in the details here. Guido has nothing left to prove and yet the reason he's a one-name moniker is because he doesn't stop turning out hair like this—an entire head lined with braids that fed into one big Medusa-like bun. It was a hard, edgy reworking of the status quo, which is exactly what he does best.

In typical Tommy Hilfiger fashion, the beauty look was classically cool, "it's rock chicks in the sun," said makeup artist Pat McGrath who used Cover Girl products on the models including Gigi Hadid. Bronzed cheeks, nude lips and air-dried locks formed the winning formula.

The Look: Clean Slate
How-To: If there was any doubt that the house of Dior loves flowers more than any other, this show set the record straight once and for all. The clothes were stunning, the hair and makeup was beautiful, but it was nearly impossible to pull your attention away from the hundreds of thousands of blue delphiniums decorating the entrance through which the guests and models came in. For 15 minutes, it smelled like spring, it looked like spring and it sure as hell felt like spring—hopeful, bright and young. "It's a new season and we wanted a pure girl with a fresh face," said makeup artist Peter Philips, who used various shades of pink—"It's the most flattering on all the girls; we tried peach but it's hard on olive tones"—to create a soft, sensual balance with the more controlled hair. He blended prune-colored liner along the upper lashes, brushed pale pink highlighting powder across the lids, then topped the eyes off with the same bright pink blush used on the cheeks. "It becomes almost like a big pink shadow that way." As for the hair, it was blown out with smoothing oil, gathered in a low ponytail that covered the ears and wrapped into a choker—think of it as the new take on the coat tuck-in everyone was doing a few seasons ago. "It's Puritanical, but in a very kind of futuristic way," said Guido.

NARS Cosmetics created make up looks for several designers: Erdem, Christopher Kane, David Koma, Thakoon, Rodarte, SUNO, J.W. Anderson, and so on. All looks that NARS make up artists created are very dewy and glossy.

With Val Garland as the lead artist, NARS created a look for Erdem SS16 described as: "Tea stained eye haunted with a creamy, velvet finish. Skin is moist and windswept, but beautiful.". The skin was very glowy and heatlhy looking and to get the velvet finish they used Soft Velvet loose powder on top of the concealer and Copacabana Illuminator to highlight the cheekbones, then the Vientiane Matte Multiple was added on the apples of the cheeks.

Lucia Pieroni worked with NARS to create a look for Christopher Kane's fashion show. The character and the story the clothes and make up were telling was described as: “She is a creation coming out of a destruction. A raw and undone girl, unaware about her own beauty. Bushy and feral brows and effortless skin. Naïve beauty that is childlike and honest.”.
You'd think that for a look as simple as this not many make up products were used, but they have a very light consitency and were used more as an enhancment to the skin. The products were: NARSskin Luminous Moisture Cream NARSskin Total Replenishing Eye Cream NARSskin Optimal Brightening Concentrate Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Stick Concealer and Orgasm Illuminator and Anguilla Matte Multiple were used on the cheeks.

NARS Lip gloss in the shade Sweet Revenge was used as highlight to really bring out the cheeks and SUNO SS16 fashion show. And for Opening Ceremony the look was similar - Tripple X lip gloss applied on the bridge of the nose and cupids bow for a 'sweaty' look. James Boehemer was the lead artist for both.

Minimal makeup ruled again at Opening Ceremony where James Boehmer, NARS Director of Global Artistry, described the look as "beautiful sweat" (seriously!); a "nude, muted lip with very glossy skin." Try the NARS Triple X Lip Gloss on the bridge of the nose, Cupid's bow and high points of the cheekbones to get the look.

David Koma had NARS do the make up for his show. The look was created by Andrew Gallimore who is the makeup artist ambassador for NARS UK. He described it as: “The look is that of a kick boxing, ballet dancer on holiday. She is more black belt than black swan.”. Dewy, glowing, post workout bronzed skin, messy brows - very real and fresh look. The look was completed with wet, even greasy looking hair styled by Karin Bigler.

Another fashion brand that NARS Cosmetics collaborated with this season was Thakoon NYC. Diane Kendal was the lead make up artist and she described the look as “Effortless beauty - natural, healthy and glowing.”

To create this flawless base they used NARSskin Aqua Gel Luminous Oil-Free Moisturizer, NARSskin Total Replenishing eye cream, Radiant Creamy concealer and Stick concealer and set everything with pressed powder. For a healthy glow they used blushes in Sex Appeal and Craving Dual- Intensity. Eyelids were glossy - Triple X Lipgloss and Santa Monica Boulevard Larger than life eyeliner for definition. The same gloss was used on the lips and brows were very natural.

Last but not least, the make up for Tanya Taylor SS16 was super shiny and fresh. NARS International lead make up artist, Uzo, created these strobbed looks with a couple of NARS classics: Copacabana Illuminator and Copacabana Multiple were used on lighter skin tones and Laguna Illuminator and South Beach Multiple on darker skin tones, all mixed with Adoration Dual-Intensity Blush for and extra pop.
