Advert Day & Night | Inspiration & Hair Charts

The idea of this hairstyle is that, by covering the eyes with the hair, other features will stand out more and the viewer will know exactly what the advert is promoting, without having the product on it. They say a photograph says a 1000 words and that is what I want to achieve with mine as NARS are known for simple, elegant and classy, yet interesting, and different adverts. They don't always have the product on the image and when they do the product never outstands the make up look. They are promoting a look rather than the product. I will have the logo of my brand and a quote by Francois placed somewhere in the image (have to figure out where once I look more into poses and start my shoots).

The hair that will be shown in the advert wil be most likely braided, I got the idea in our Advanced Braiding lesson with Lottie. I will have to practice my braiding in order to create the looks that I have in mind.

Here are some images of inspiration:

1st Hairstyle

This hairstyle is created with two fishtail braids that start at the back/side and go over the face onto the opposite side where I'd pin them. One is going horizontally and the other one at an angle because I think this would make the look more interesting than having them on on top of another but also the right (left in the photo) is the side that will be showing off the bronzer in my advert.

2nd Hairstyle

Four plaits on on top of another going across the eyes.

3rd Hairstyle

I hybrid braid that Lottie showed us in our lesson -  my favourite by far. This is just a simple one that falls diagonally.

4th Hairstyle

Basket weaved braid. Not sure if I'd be able to create this but I love the look of it.

5th Hairstyle

This one is slightly more complex. I would start the hairstyle by braiding the half dutch/ hybrid braid that goes across the forehead, close to the hairline. I would leave one section of hair that is wide enough to cover the eyes and make it really slicked with gel (wet look) and then pin on the other side of the face. Then I would take some sections from the back of the head that I haven't braided and I would plait them and bring forward and have them going behind the braid and coming out over the slicked section.

6th Hairstyle

A hybrid braid (the one on top) and two normal (could be fish tail or even twists) following its direction and covering the eyes.

7th Hairstyle

This one is quite similar to the look above, but the two plaits are not going down in the same angle as the hybrid. I'd pin them under the hybrid braid so that they stay in place, but what I could also do is weave them in and have them going in and out throughout the braid.

8th & 9th Hairstyle

One look but two slightly different variations.
I'd dutch braid the hair from the crown of the head, forwards. There would be 4 braids and basically I'd criss cross them. In the first look the ends of the two braids that are on the very left/ right I would make them go horizontally, tucked under the middle ones and following their direction. In the second look the ends are not tucked away but are going upwards and would be pinned on the other side. It's hard to describe but basically the two braids in the middle would be shaped as two L's facing eachother and the two braids on the ends would form a W. These looks would best work if I braided a piece of thin wire. The wire would help maintain the shape.

10th & 11th Hairstyle

Another look in two variations; a big hybrid braid decorated with two (in the first image) and three (in the second) fistail braids. The fish tails look like they have a mind of their own but I think it adds more dynamic and movement.

12th Hairstyle

This is a 11 strand plait that starts on the side of the head and goes across the face where it is pinned. The hair that isn't used for the plait is slicked with gel.

13th Hairstyle

Another hybrid but it is lower in the middle then goes back up on the other end. For this I would have to really work on the grip if I decide to create it, otherwise it will end up looking very messy and uneven.

14th & 15th  Hairstyle

Two french braids criss crossing in the first image and in the second I added a fish tail plait that goes under the french braids. This added plait is supposed to add more 'coverage' to the face and fullness to the hairstyle.

16th Hairstyle

Very asymetric look; one side is slicked from the centre parting to above the ear, then tied with two clear elastic bands (only the front sections) and plaited into two normal plaits. Whereas the other side is dutch braided and the braids and falling down over the 2 plaits. However, looking at the drawing now, dutch braids could be basked weaved with the two plaits, too, it would look quite interesting I think.

17th Hairstyle

A hybrid braid with little plaits coming from the back and layered one on top of another. Could also be weaved.

18th Hairstyle

Here I've put six dutch braids coming down the face. I tied some of them together so that the features (lips, cheekbones) show and the braids are kind of like the frame. I got the inspiration for this from the cover that Nars shot for Vogue Korea (Jul 2013) where the model has netting over her face (the photo is in the post with advert face charts).

19th Hairstyle

Again six dutch braids but here the ends are tucked away in the big fistail braid that is covering the eyes.

20th Hairstyle

A plait that goes across the face. What makes the plait interesting is the fact that each of the 3 sections used to plait it are actually fish tail plaits.

A hybrid braid decorated with two braids that go in and out of it (weaved in).

23rd Hairstyle

Two dutch hybrid braids. The one on the left would be thicker and braided first, then the one on top would be quite thin and a lot less hair would be used.

24th Hairstyle

Four dutch braids tucked under a straight, slicked (with gel) section of hair that is covering the eyes and I also added a little plait under the section.

25th Hairstyle

This hair chart looks very messy but the idea is to slick all of the hair back and leave sections of hair around the centre parting. Hair would be plaited from the crown area to the hair line and the braids would go up and down in a U shape. Wire would work well for this look too.

I know that I am not the best at braiding but I have been getting more confident with my braiding and plaiting recently so I think that with practice I would be able to create these looks. As you can see I really like the dutch hybrid braid and I think I will be sticking with it for my look. I will be using a wig, a blonde one that we have in uni, because it is quite long and would be perfect for creating these looks. Also, I think it would be a lot easier to practice on a wig than having someone sit for hours and unpatiently wait for me to create the desired hairstyle. This way I can go in the studio, style the wig and then have it ready for whenever I decide to shoot my advert look.
Also, one hairstyle will be used for both shoots, but slight changes might be made.
