Top 10 Campaigns of SS16

The Business of Fashion website posted on Jan 28 2016 their "Top 10 Campaigns of the Season", this was an article that Kat posted for us on MyCourse.

The first designer on their list is Marc Jacobs who described his campaign as My America, and created online content with the engagement factor of editorial. All was shot by David Sims and styled by Katie Grand. Jacobs used a wide range of models, actresses and celebrities such as Adriana Lima, Emmanuelle Seigner and her daughter Morgane Polanski, Lana Lachowski (transgender film director), Bette Midler (gay icon), etc.

The photographs are a square shape, just like the Instagram photographs we see every day. However it was not printed in the square shape, they left some white on the side, sort of a polaroid photograph and in the bottom right corner it says MARC JACOBS. Models look as if they are really enjoing themsleves as there are images of them caught in mid laughter. The vignette effect was added to create more depth in the images.

The hair in the shot with M. Polanski and her mother they both have slicked low pony tails. Polanski's eyes are hidden under cat-eye sunglasses but her mother has gold, shimmery metalic make up. Both the eye make up and hair can be linked to my evening editorial look.

Valetino's tribal Ready-To-Wear collection and campaign really stood out this season. Earth toned maxi dresses, cornrows and beautiful landscape of Kenya Amboseli National Park. Some shots featured Masai tribespeople.
While some models were dark skinned, others were white which caused a lot of hype in October last year, when the campaign had been launched as some thought it 'wasn't right'. Never the less the shots taken by Steve McCurry were breath taking. The models are standing still, showcasing the garnments while (in this particular image below) there is a lot of movement around them as Masai tribespeople are preforming their tribal dance and there's some people in the background, mostly wearing red and blue.
The same hair and make up appeared in their catwalk show.

Claudia Shiffer, Cindy Crawfard and Naiomi Campbell starred in Balmain's SS16 campaign, shot in by Steven Klein. Images are highly contrasted, black and white and shot from below in full / knee lenght. It was shot on location, agains a white wall.
The hair and make up are natural and the wind (whether it is a fan or natural wind) is creating a bit of movement. Poses are strong.

Gucci's campaign was one of my favourite campaigns this season because of the styling and the overall vintage, 70's mood that it had. Colours red, green and brow dominate throughout all the images.

The eccentric models, male and female, look uninterested in the camera, they're doing their own thing, not really paying attention to the photographer. I find it really interesting how they chose to shoot in different locations such as a rooftop of a building in Berlin, the public, club toilet, the subway, even a peacock that mirrored the colours from the clothing (or the other way round).

Luca Lemaire starred in Raf Simons' first print advert since he left Dior. Photographer Willy Vanderperre and stylist Oliver Rizzo helped him produce coloured and black and white photographs featuring an anonymous figure. Simons explained that the figure represents his grandfathers who he never got the chance to meet, it suggests their absence but also that they will always be with him, in photographs.

I like the combination of the colour that I think represents the present and the black and white represent the past. I think that the colour photographs were shot in studio, and as we can see the b&w was shot in a park. The Raf Simons logo is placed right in the middle of the image that is on the right side.

I must say Louis Vuitton's campaign was my least favourite due to the Japanese - manga, anime style they used. The brand collaborated with the character designer, Tetsuya Nomura, to create Lightening, a character from a video game Final Fantasy VIII.
The pose suggests that the character is using his super powers, but actually is holding the L. Vuitton Petit- Male bag.

J. W. Anderson's campaign had an interesting layout in a form of a stamp with high contrast, black and white / sepia effect. I image is placed on a white canvas just like a stamp would be placed on an envelope. It is very tiny which makes the viewers stop and look closely.
They actually created stamps which are being sold in sets of 10 at J.W. Anderson workshop in London. They hold the UK 1st class value and can be posted as any other stamps.
The overall mood is very regal and hairstyle reminds me of the first decade of the 20th century. The model, Mayka Merino, dressed in one of the outfits from the SS16 collection was photographed by Jamie Hawkesworth.

Number 8 on the list is Equipment. Their campaign celebrates modern-day love and relationship between two women featuring Kate Moss and Daria Werbowy. The images were shot by Werbowy, topless in a mirror, while Moss is wearing only a menswear inspired shirt. The two are on a fictional holiday, and the hairstyle suggest that they have spent the day at the beach. I think it is interesting how they did not use a plain mirror. The company's logo is at the bottom (in the middle or left) of the black and white photographs, in black/ white writing.
Brett Ramey told the telegraph:
"Kate was the hair, the makeup, the styling, the driver and the production team all in one. Daria was the creative director, art director, the photographer and the visionary"

Celine's campaign looked like a collage as the images of models were cut and pasted onto a black or white background. Collages look like they were framed as there is a white frame aorund them. The image on the left has the brand's name as is smaller in size.
The make up is the same as it was in their catwalk shows - classic red lip and in one image the hair is slicked into a pony tail while in the other it is natual, effortlessly swept to the side.

Dior was last on the list, Dior Homme to be exact. The models were musicians Oliver Sim and  Rinus Van de Velde, model Victor Nylander and actor Alain-Fabien Delon Jr. The photographer was Willy Vanderperre who also shot Raf Simons' camapaing. The images look very sharp and the models look smart. In post production they placed a portrait photograph over a land scape. Both are in black and white. The portrait one is more posey, shot in the studio, the Dior logo is written in big white writing and has a white frame whereas the second image shows the model writing/ drawing / reading something on a staircase.

A lot of campaigns were shot in black and white and there is a lot of white framing around the photographs. I am thinking of making my editorial black and white then have the palm tree, tropical overlay in colour or the other way around as it would probably look very interesting. The white framing is something NARS uses a lot in their adverts and I am planning to do that in mine too. I have already said, I think in the post where I posted images from my shoot that idea, which has yet to be created tonight.
