For this book he used models from all kinds of different backgrounds; Canada, Russia, Nigeria, Belgium, Malaysia, Holand and more, and in the second book he used normal people like you and me. He also used men which I think is amazing, because make up is not limitted to only women.
As Nars explains in the introduciton, the book is trick and gimmick free. He photographed each model under the same light and same angle a before and after look. The plastic overlay that is between two images shows us what products he put and where so it is soo simple to recreate and learn from the book. I really like how even though they used all NARS products and listed all of them, they also described the shades so you can use product that is similar to NARS.
After the introduction there is a Expert Tips section and I've taken out some that I like. The tips are both inspirational and educational.
"Makeup isn't a haircut. The effects are always temporary."
"It's okay to mix colours together to make something unique. It's okay to dilute colours. It's okay to do whatever you want!"
"I know plenty of women who've been told they "shouldn't" wear this or that because it "just doesn't go". Says who? Banish the word "shouldn't" from your makeup vocabulary forever."
"Be open to new ideas."
The book is devided in several sections where goes in depth and gives many many tips. The sections are: eyes, lips, neutrals, shimmer monochrome suntan, pastels, color and skin. I like how he really tried to explain and show not only ways of how to accentuate our natural features but also how to use colours, different finishes (shimmers, matte) etc. At the end of each section there are two pages with all the looks created in the section with step by step directions of how to recreate them. I also really like how he hasn't labeled any looks, but it is up to the viewer's interpretation of the look.
Nars said that with some looks he hasn't even used foundation, but he said several times throughout the book that concealer is a must! Even in the looks where foundation was used it was blended so perfectly and the skin really shines through. Every look was kept as natural looking as possible, even the ones where he used dark eyeshadow and lipstick.
All looks are beautiful and I found myself staring at the before and after photographs for ages. Some looks can really be linked to this years spring / summer trends, my research and the designs I have created so I wanted to include them on my blog. I took photos of both before and after photos, there is a lot of them, but I don't see a reason why they all shouldn't be here.
The red lip that is trendy at the moment is timeless as well as black eye liner so of course Nars used the two elements in the book. However, he didn't use the classic red, it was more like dabs of it or deep burgundy shades. The long whispy lashes, glowing, sunkissed skin, blue eyeshadows, colours and brows brushed upwards are all seen throughout the looks, too. There are a lot of very natural and simple 'no makeup' looks, but as we have the before and after photos as well as the list of products we can see how many products he actually used to create them. I also really like all the shimmery and glossy looks as they were a great inspiration for my editorial designs.

All in all, this book was a big inspiration and help when it came to creating my designs, but I know that it 100% helped many people out there who may have been struggling with make up or thought it was more complicated than it is.
