Spring / Summer Makeup Trends - Red Lips

Red lip has always been a classic and you can never go wrong. It is seductive and can really change a look from day to night. 'No makeup' look and with a red lip was seen all over catwalks this season. There were a few designs with fucsia pink lip, but overall, when it comes to bright lips, reds were everywhere. The shades, however, varied from bright cherry (or apple) red (DKNY, Oscar de la Renta, Cushine et Ochs) to deep blood red and burgundy/ purple vampy lips(Anna Sui, Antonio Marras). The finish can be glossy (Jason Wu, Acne) or matte (Gilles, TopShop Unique, Gareth Pugh). 
Also the way lipstick was applied was different - some had a stained lip (Dolce & Gabbana) while others had a very defined sharp lip (Givenchy, Nina Ricci). 
These looks were mostly completed with a black eyeliner on the eyes and fresh, radiant skin with minimal contouring. 
The makeup really stood out at Gareth Pugh's SS16 fashion show. The models had a stocking mask over their faces with eyes painted on and framed with geometrical shapes (stars mostly) - 80's inspired. As the eyes were so edgy and bold, the lips were very simple - matte. painted on with acrylic red. The make up artist was Val Garland (for MAC) sad that the idea of the look was "Schizo disco, plastic pulp, Soho sex club with a bit of Drag". The hairstylist Malcolm Edwards

Vivienne Westwood always stands out with her edgy clothing and that always shows in make up, too. The look for her SS16 collection consisted of an outlined bright red lip, utlined with strokes of black. Val Garland (for MAC) created the look.

The lip at Veronique Branquinho SS16 show were very natural, with a stroke of red in the centre. Inge Grongnard, the make up designer, decided to go with a very natual look - bare face, with only moisturiser. To add to the effect of the red, the rest of the lip was covered with a pale shade of concealer. Similar look was at Martin Margiela's fashion show - focusing the red on the centre of the lip.

The Look: Post-Party Chic How-To: Nina Ricci quite literally shined this season: Everything—the clothes, the shoes, the bags, the runway, the lips—was coated in a sexy, highly-reflective patent lacquer. "We liked the idea of a chic woman who had a really great night and now she's going out onto the street the next morning, so she's put on dark glasses and a slick of lipstick," said makeup artist Aaron de Mey, who wanted to create "a different kind of shine; one that has a 3-D look to it." To achieve that, he started with a blue-red lipstick as the base. Then, he blended orange and red lip pigments, stirred in bronze and copper glitter particles and added a big dose of clear gloss to seal it all together. That custom, "car-paint-like" mix got applied right before the models hit the runway, since things this wet tend to make a mess. "In the real world," de Mey acknowledged, "this gloss thing is really tricky, so for the everyday woman, I'd do a lipstick first then draw lip pencil around the edges only where needed. Put a tissue on top and powder it to get it really matte, then do another coat of lipstick and shade with concealer to give a very precise line. Last, keep the gloss just in the center." The hair at Victoria Beckham by Redken Global Creative Director, Guido was a sophisticated, simple style full of shine. The orangy-red matte lipstick against dewy 'supermodel skin' came courtesy of lead makeup artist Pat McGrath. Hot!

Lead makeup artist Gucci Westman gave girls dewy skin with the MAC Strobe Cream and SK11 Mid-Day Setting Spray. The main focus was on the lips, though - lined with MAC's Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in the fuchsia shade More To Love and layered with a matte pink lipstick to suit each model. The hair was center parted and styled in a sleek, sophisticated chignon.:

The vampy looks were very bold. These colours could easily transform any of the looks above to evening looks. However, the dark lip has became an every day colour, too, recently, and I, personally, am a big fan of these shades and tend to wear burgundy shades quite often.
Oxblood and deep purples are usually mostly worn throughout fall and winter, but as we can see they will continue into spring and summer this year. 
Some designers went for a one shade of lip colour, whereas others created an ombre effect by mixing colours and using lighter colour in the centre of the lip and darker in the outlines (Shiatzy Chen) while others reversed it and made the colour fade out from the centre out with wine red/ purple tones (Miu Miu, Antonio Marras). Some lip colours had a slight brown undertone (Emporio Armani).

Seems like NARS really focused on the natural, fresh looking skin and glossy make up, and did not use any red lipsticks, appart from the Marc Jacobs SS16 makeup looks. I really want to stick to the glossy effect in my designs, but will use a deep, blood red for one of the looks for my advert.
