Catwalk Make Up And Hair

Catwalk or runway make up looks and hairstyles represent high fashion (haute couture) and/ or Ready-To-Wear fashion that is showcased at fashion shows. They vary from avant garde to glamour to very natural and simple looks. Everything has to go well with the garments and the overall mood of the show. It should never out stand the clothes as they are the main focus of the show. However, the make up can be strong and bold as some shows have more theatrical roots, in comparison to photographic, editorial work.
It is obvious that the hair and make up need to go together and the make up artist and hair designer should work out the details together.

Whether you are a makeup artist or a hairstylist working on a fashion show you have to be very quick at creating the look that you were given. Often you will have no more than 20 minutes for each look. However, you always have to be very professional and the application must always be flawless and precise because there will be a lot of photographers there. Sometimes the make up design is the same for all models, but these days make up designers create individual looks for each model. This way they adapt the looks for each face shape while sticking to the same theme, colours, shapes etc.
Eyes and lips make the biggest difference in the look - they can either make it look very dramatic or very soft. Lighting has to be considered when highlighting and contouring as sometimes you really have to go over the top for the make up to show. There will be a  lot of photographers, flashes and lights and you don't want the make up to be washed out in the images. Sometimes the make up has to change during the fashion show, e.g. day time and night time outfits, therefore it should be versatile. There isn't enough time to take the make up off and apply it back on. Usually the lip colour changes from a soft to a dark bold colour because it is easiest and most effective. You need to make sure that the make up is long lasting, there won't be a lot of time for touch ups and always check your model's make up before the they walk the catwalk.

Makeup artist Francois Nars only did one show at New York Fashion Week—so naturally, he made it count, giving models edgy and unforgettable cat eyes in a rich teal shade (NARS Eyeliner Pencil in Kalisté, to be exact.) "This is a summer look that's all about the eye," he said. "Most of the girls have a teal blue line, but some have royal blue, extending past both the inner and outer corner." Redken hairstylist Guido Palau followed suit, tricking models out in punky wigs with jagged, irregular cuts.
