Spring/ Summer 2016 Hairstyles - Braids and Twists

Wet braids, messy braids, dutch braids, pony tails that go into braids, braids that go into pony tails, twists - this season we've seen them all. 

 Some used braids, plaits and twists to add someting extra to the look (Louis Vuitton, 1205, Herve, Leger, Altuzarra), while others based the looks around them (Alexander McQueen, Giles, Cristiano Burani, Tanya Taylor).

Orlando Pita, New York Fashion Week Ambassador for TRESemmé created the 'braided crown pony' at this show in New York. Starting at a deep side part, French braids went across the foreheads all the way to meet a low ponytail at the nape of the necks. The minimal makeup featured dewy highlights on the eyes, nose and lips.

This season's braids—tight, streamlined and functional—are a major shift from the loose, bohemian ones that tend to pair well with airy white dresses and pop up at festivals, perhaps because this season's collections include more black leather and buttoned-up collars than ever before. At Louis Vuitton (left), thin, peek-a-boo braids added subtle texture (think of them as grown-up versions of the hair wraps we all got on vacation as kids), while Proenza Schouler, Céline and Public School showed hard, functional (if the goal is hair that never falls out or distracts) twists everyone already knows how to do.

We loved the rope braid (or 'power braid' as they coined it) hairstyle at the Public School show in New York. Aveda's Allen Ruiz was behind the look, who used the brand's Smooth Infusion Nourishing Style Cream twice on the models; once to smooth the ponytails in prep for the clockwise twisting of two sections to the end of the hair, and again to smooth over any flyaways.

Stylist Tina Outen created this amazing twisted hairstyle armed with Bumble and bumble products. She split the hair into two equal sections and tonged the front section of the hair away from the face, brushed through to create a soft wave. Next she pulled both sections into ponytails just below the ears, twisted and criss-crossed the hair around in a figure of eight then pinned to secure.

These soft, feminine updos were pure romance. Superstylist Guido explained his method: "Redken's Wind Blown 05 was the main product I used because it gives you some friction and texture when creating these sorts of updos – it makes the hair very manageable to work with. I twisted the back section up so that it's very loose and soft, and then twisted the front pieces back around the head, accentuating it with the gold thread so it's almost like a bit of jewellery in the hair."

The detail was at the back for the Altuzarra models this NYFW. Stylist Odile Gilbert for Moroccanoil explained how to achieve the twisted 'V': "With each hand, grab a section of hair from the front of each side of the head. Begin to pull these two sections of the hair away from the face, twisting them back and away from the face. Secure low with a clear elastic, creating a "V" shape with the hair." Do try this at home.

We loved the look at Tanya Taylor in NY where NARS International Lead Makeup Stylist, Uzo, gave the girls' illuminated skin and a pinky-lilac lip (courtesy of the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Never Say Never). The models also sported sprouting topknots for graphic effect.

Dutch braids are my favourite at the moment as they really stand out. I expecially like the braided hairstyles that Label M created for Giles and Orlando Pita for Herve Leger and I also like the twisted low buns that Tina Outen created for Paul Smith. 
Braids and plaits are good for catwalks because they aren't hard to create but look very effective and I will incorporate them in one of my catwalk looks. The braids at Herve Leger's show I found really interesting and might try to do something like that as well. The only problem is that I am not that good at braiding because I don't do them as tight, thinking I'd pull my model's hair. I think that in our next technical lesson, or lesson after that we will do braiding, and with practice I know I will be able to create something for my designs. If anything I can always do a normal braid or a twist.
