I wanted to include this 2012 holiday collection on my blog because I really like the idea behind it. Nars is a big lover of pop art and Andy Warhol, portraits expecially. Warhol proved that art could take any for and make up is by all means art and, in Francoi's opinion, a self- portrait. 

“I believe in low lights and trick mirrors,” Andy Warhol once said. The Pop Art visionary—who owned hundreds of spiky platinum wigs and mastered the art of camouflage—celebrated eccentric forms of beauty, filling his aluminum-walled Factory on Forty-Seventh Street with fellow artists, derailed debutantes, rock stars, and drag queens. Now as the timing ripens for an Andy moment with the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s fall retrospective, “Regarding Warhol,” - Francois Nars

In this image below we can see in top left corner Warhol's Marylin Monroe portaits and the rest are the products and colours that Nars came up with. The colours look almost exactly as the artwork.

But Nars did not only take the colours, he took it to another level and actually replicated the portraits in the eyeshadows. The make up art was put in the packaging of the NARS single eyeshadows, but is actually a mini palette as at least three colours were used to create them. The "Flowers" (1964) are poppies which have been printed in many variations and colour combinations such as these below, and the portrait is a six image self- portrait of the artist (1967).

Along with the eyeshadows, lipsticks, lip glosses and crayons and nail varnishes that are in the packaging that we are all familiar with, the palettes and gift sets released within the collection have Warhol's portraits on them. Just like there were Bourdin's photographs in the Guy Bourdin collection in 2013. The NARS logo on the packaging is white as well as the name of the artist, Andy Warhol, which is slightly tilted and there is a little mark in the top left corner which makes it look like it was stamped onto the packaging. I've read that the mirrors that come within the packaging have a quote by Warhol printed on in but couldn't find a photo to prove it.

The packaging and gift sets names were inspired by Debbie Harry, Candy Darling and Eddie Sedwick's portraits as well as Warhol's self - portrait.

The video created to promote the collection looks like a casting for models. Models (male and female) change, they sit infront of the camera and pose, there are mid lenght shots and close ups and at the end they show a board with their name. The clips change quite quickly but the music, which is kind of slow and hazy makes the clips seem like they are moving slower. I don't know what the video was filmed on but the edit makes it look like it was filmed in the 60's. The music cuts to a tape where we can hear what is going on at the set. The effects used are very toned down, some almost black and white and the red lipstick mostly stands out. This is slightly unexpected since most colours in the collection are very bright. 

The hairstyles and the make up and the overall mood really makes it look like it has been filmed in the 60's, but the effects and music make it modern. The models used for the video I've never seen before but they really have the kind of 'NARS' quirky, different beautiful faces.

The advert is a re-make of one of the the Marylin Monroe's image. The make up almost looks like it was printed onto the image after it was taken, but we all know that with today's technology that was achieved with high contrast and effects in Adobe Photoshop.

Pop art didn't inspire only Francois, but I have been a big fan since I was a child. Warhol may not be here today to create art, but Nars really made his portraits and prints come to life and live on.
