I've wanted to research this to get a better understanding of the general catwalk make up. At the moment I am finding it hard, not to tell apart, but to know how to create a look that you can look at and say straight away 'Yes, that is a catwalk look'. Next I will focus on this season's trends and creating the look for my project.
Natural Look
This is a softest type of catwalk make up and hair, but don't be fooled, sometimes a lot more products are used than one my think. It is both easy and hard to create a natural 'no make up look' while using a range of products. It may seem easy, but sometimes it could take longer than some avan garde looks (the ones that are less complex).
Even a natural look requires definiton of the face. Some choose to apply products all over the face, such as the eyes, brows, cheeks and lips, while some choose to use less products (foundation + bronzer/ highlighter or foundation + lips, etc. Bronzer and highlighter are often use to create a bronzed look, and other products are usually shimmery, rather than matte. Hair is usually left natural, with texturising products added for a beachy, messy, sometimes wet look, tied in a pony tail, braided or a bun. This is a common look created for spring and summer catwalk shows as it is the kind of look that everyone wears or wishes to have throughout the warm months.

Sophisticated Looks:
A bit more complex look, in the sense that it requires more products and usually both lip, face and cheek product. Red lip (with liner), eyeliner and false lashes are common, from what I've seen in my research. Sleek hairstyles such as pony tals, bridal looking buns, big voluminous glamorous curls, etc.

Avant Garde Looks:
These are the most creative out of all and eye-catching. While the natural and sophisticated looks are usually for Ready-To-Wear shows, avant garde/ fantasy is definitely seen in the Haute Couture shows.
These looks are co-ordinated with the clothing, but don't over take it. Designs are strong and effective, crazy colours are used, different shapes, different materials; glitter, sequins, lace, pearls, netting etc. This means that the artist creativity can really be shown, combined with the fashion designer's vision.
The hair can be teased, with props in it, padding, wigs, hair pieces, etc.
Of course, the first designer that comes to my mind is Alexander McQueen who was the king of avant garde, Gareth Pugh is following his footsteps, too.

Of course, there are always exceptions and best looks are created when rules are broken. However, this helped me to create a clearer image in my head. NARS is not the avant garde type of brand, meaning it doesn't collaborate with avant garde designers really. So my looks will be natural, soft and sophisticated, but will try to make them different and effective at the same time.
